How To Apply Lipstick On Mature Lips

As we age our lips tend to lose the collagen which helps them appear plump and full. This results in our lips appearing to be smaller and thinner. While this may be troubling, the good news is that you don’t have to run out and buy into some sort of surgical treatment to improve the quality of your lips; all you need is a couple of tools, some know-how, and you can have full, beautiful lips in no time.

The key here is to create the illusion of having a fuller pout.

Below are the steps you can use to restore the youthfulness to your lips:

Exfoliate your Lips

Before you even think about applying a lipstick or a lip liner to your lips, make sure that your lips are exfoliated. Lipstick looks best when they are applied to smooth lips, so to prevent the “chunky” or dry skin look, use a lip exfoliant on your lips every day. You can buy products on the market, or you can simply rub a cloth gently over your lips to remove any excess or dry skin.

Keep them Moisturized

No matter what time of day, what time of year, or whether or not you will be wearing lipstick that day, always keep your lips hydrated by applying a lip balm to your lips that contains an SPF of 15 or higher. This is especially important in dry, cold conditions that winter brings, or hot, bright conditions that we face in the summer.

The Lip Liner

The key to having a beautiful pout is to start with a wonderful lip liner. Lip liner will not only help you create the illusion of having thicker lips, but it will also help hold your lipstick in place and give your lips a bit more shape and definition. The best lip liner to choose is one that is either nude or that is a slightly lighter shade than the lipstick that you plan on wearing. Make sure that the lip liner is sharp, and then use it to draw a line around your lips that is just slightly outside of your natural lip line.

The Lipstick

Once the lip liner has been applied, it’s time to choose your favorite shade of lipstick. Take your lipstick and a lip brush, and fill in your lips with the lipstick shade of your choice. The best way to do this is to use short, feathering strokes. Once done, blot your lipstick with a tissue and reapply as needed.

TIP: To give your lips that fuller look, take a lighter shade of lipstick and blot a small amount of it right in the center of your lip. Rub your lips together slightly to blend it in better.

The Gloss

An easy way to make your lips look fuller, whether you are wearing lipstick or not, is to apply a gloss overtop. This is an easy way to also add a bit of a youthful glow to your lips.
